There will be “heavy winter rains” at the end of the week, says Met Eireann in a big snow update for the country.
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will see winter conditions hit in a “drastic change” for Ireland, says the National Forecaster.
Temperatures are forecast to plummet to -3 ° C ahead of days of subzero conditions in Dublin and the rest of the country.
But Met Eireann forecaster Paul Downes told Dublin Live that “it is too early to say what the type of precipitation will be.”
He said, “It could be sleet, it could be snow on higher ground, we’ll have to see closer to the time.”
“It’s definitely going to be a pretty drastic change from Wednesday to Thursday as temperatures drop on Thursday afternoon. We expect a heavy frost on Thursday night, particularly in the eastern half of the country.”
“It will be a generally cold night in the last half of the week, but there will be quite a noticeable change in daytime temperatures.
“Currently, it seems that Thursday will be the coldest night. Friday seems a little warmer, but especially in the western half of the country there will be a lot of heavy showers with a risk of hail.”
Downes said a weather warning was unlikely at this stage, but insisted it was an “evolving situation.”
He added: “At this time it does not appear to be a warning criterion, but it is an evolving situation, so definitely keep an eye on the website for updates.
“Sometimes it looks like it’s windy, but most of it will stay off shore, sometimes with possible coastal warnings.
“Models are cutting and changing on this, so we’ll definitely let you know.”
Here is the forecast for today and the next few days according to Met Eireann:
Tuesday: “Today will be cloudy and dry, apart from a few isolated patches of drizzle, and sometimes some bright or sunny intervals will develop. The highest temperature is around 10 degrees with light to moderate west breezes.”
Tonight: It will be cloudy and mostly dry at first, but outbreaks of rain will come from the northwest later in the evening. Lower temperatures of 4 or 5 degrees with light to moderate winds from west to southwest “.
Wednesday: “Any bouts of rain will clear early tomorrow morning, leaving a dry morning and an afternoon with sunny spells. Scattered showers will develop later in the afternoon into the evening. It will be a cold and windy day with afternoon temperatures of only 6 or 7 degrees, moderate to cool and gusty westerlies. Cold and unstable with stormy rains that sometimes bring a wintry mix. “
Wednesday night: “Widespread rains will continue tomorrow night and merge with longer periods of rain in the southwest. Some rains will be heavy with hail and possibly thunder, and may turn winter in the northwest highlands. A cold night with lower temperatures -1 to +3 degrees with moderate winds from the southwest.
Thursday: “It will be very cold with widespread heavy rains or longer periods of rain. There will be a risk of hail and thunder and some rains may turn winter on high ground in the west. The rains will withdraw to western areas during the afternoon, with conditions more dry and bright elsewhere. Temperatures will only reach 3-5 degrees, so it will feel very cold. Winds will be light to moderate, out of the west or northwest. “
Thursday night: “The winter rains will retreat mainly to the western coast counties. Many areas will be dry with clear spells and a heavy frost on the ground that will cause some patches of ice. Lower temperatures of -3 to +2 degrees, plus cold in Ulster and Leinster. “

Friday: “It will be another cold day. Dry and sunny in many areas during the morning, with rains in the western coastal parts. Some of those rains will be heavy and possibly winter. Clouds will increase in Ulster and Leinster later, which will bring showers or longer periods of rain, falling as sleet on higher ground. Temperatures during the afternoon will only reach 3 to 6 degrees and there will be an additional wind chill as cool or strong winds develop from the northwest. “
