TOMORROW will be the coldest night of winter yet, Met Eireann warned.
Temperatures will plummet to a biting -7 ° C in parts of Ireland as Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) begins to take hold.
An SSW was the same weather event responsible for the infamous Beast from the East in 2018.
Met Eireann tonight said temperatures will remain below freezing all day in parts of the Midwest and the West.
The national forecaster said: “Tuesday night appears to be the coldest night of winter so far. Temperatures will drop to -5 to -7C in the west and north.”
TEMPERATURES BELOW FREEZING ‘ALL DAY’
“The lowest winter temperature so far was recorded in Roscommon last Saturday night, dropping to -5.9 ° C. Lows of -2 or -3 ° C will be widespread tonight.
“Colder away from the east coast.
“It’s worth noting that temperatures will remain BELOW freezing all day Wednesday in parts of the Midlands and the West.”
Irish weather guru Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather said some parts of the country could see snow Wednesday night, but only a small amount.
He tweeted: “The latest weather charts continue to show a weak band of rain turning to snow across the country from Wednesday night through Thursday.
“It could bring a small amount of snow to some, but many areas seeing dust or nothing at all.”
Tonight it will also be freezing with lows of -3C.
Tonight’s forecast reads: “Very cold tonight, clear frosts and widespread severe frosts. Lows of -3 and + 1C with mostly light breezes from the northeast.
“Most of the dry areas, rain, hail, sleet or snow will continue to affect parts of Leinster & Munster with isolated rains in Ulster.”
