Met Eireann has forecast snow to fall next week as there is an urgent warning of “dangerous conditions” for the entire country.
The alert is in effect for all of Ireland until 10am on Sunday after a subzero cold snap last night.
It says: “Temperatures will drop to minus 3-4 degrees Saturday night, cooler locally away from the coasts. This will lead to widespread frost of hard ground and icy surfaces, with potentially dangerous conditions.”
And it will still be cold today, with temperatures again dropping to -3 ° C overnight.
A forecaster from Met Eireann said: “Today is cold with good sunshine, although frost and icy stretches will remain in some areas during the day. Scattered rains will occur near the western and eastern coasts, with some rains moving towards inland in Leinster during the afternoon and evening, turning wintry in some areas, bitterly cold with highs of only 1 to 4 degrees with a light to moderate breeze from the northeast.
“Temperatures are expected to drop between -3 and +1 degrees tonight, the coldest in the west with frost and icing. A light breeze from the northeast will keep temperatures just above freezing on the east coast. Rain, sleet and snow will affect the east in the coastal counties, sometimes drifting inland. Elsewhere it will remain largely dry with clear periods and some fog may form in the west. “
And as we move into next week, more snow is likely to fall on Monday, with intense cold conditions expected overnight.
Thursday and Friday will bring more winter rains, as well as sleet or snow, with temperatures reaching zero at times.
One forecaster added: “Tomorrow Monday, dry and sunny in much of the west and north, and frost and ice will slowly clear in the morning. A cloudier day in the east and south, with rain hitting Leinster. and Munster, and that the winter will be hotter. Afternoon temperatures of 2 to 4 degrees, slightly higher on the north and east coasts. Light to moderate northeast winds will occasionally be cool and gusty on the east coast.
“There will be cloudy conditions in the east Monday night, with persistent winter rains on the coast. Elsewhere, it will be a cold, dry night with clear spells. Lowest temperatures of -2 to +1 degrees. Winds will be generally mild, north-northeast in direction and fog may form in the south.
“There will be little change until Tuesday; sometimes it will be cloudy in the east and south, with isolated rains and downpours on the coasts, there will be good sun elsewhere. Fog can persist into the afternoon in some parts of the south. Temperatures In the afternoon 2 or 3 degrees will drop overnight to as low as -3 degrees. Light breezes from the north or northeast will keep the temperatures slightly higher on the coasts.
“A change in wind direction on Wednesday, light north winds will return from the west. It will be a mostly dry day with only a few isolated showers in the coastal areas.
