Ireland’s weather will turn extremely cold this week with the possibility of snow on higher ground.
Met Eireann is forecasting a series of icy nights and Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights are expected to be bitterly cold.
And Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather has said that snow is a possibility Tuesday and Wednesday in “very high ground.”
The weather will start to get very cold starting Monday and daytime temperatures will remain close to zero.
A forecaster from Met Eireann said: “Getting colder for next week with bouts of rain and drizzle at times to start. Getting more settled by the end of the week but keeping the cold.
“Lower temperatures of -1 to +3 degrees on Monday night with risk of frost and icy patches in a light or variable southern breeze.
“Totally cloudy on Tuesday with irregular bouts of rain and drizzle mainly in the southern half of the country.
“A cold day with a light breeze from the east and highs of 3 to 6 degrees overall, but a degree or two more in the south.
The rain will become more widespread and persistent through Tuesday night with a moderate breeze from the northwest.
“The lowest temperatures of 0 to 4 degrees in the northern half of the country and 4 to 6 degrees in the southern half occur early in the evening.
“Current indications suggest that Wednesday will be a mostly cloudy day with irregular bouts of rain and drizzle, gradually being confined to coastal areas.
“Higher temperatures of 5 to 7 degrees in moderate to cool and gusty north winds.
It becomes mostly dry and clear Wednesday night, although spotty drizzle will persist along the shores. A cold night with minimum temperatures of -1 to +3 degrees with risk of frost and frozen patches with moderate winds from the north “.
And the forecast doesn’t change much for Christmas with cold conditions but little chance of snow.
The forecaster added: “Christmas Eve looks like it will be cold with sunny spells. A dry day for most, but there will be isolated light rains on the coasts. Higher temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees with a mild to moderate north breeze. .
“Staying mostly dry with long, clear spells and a slight or variable north breeze on Thursday night, perfect for Santa’s big flight. It will be a cold night with risk of widespread frost.
“At the moment, it looks like Christmas Day will be cold, but mostly dry and bright. However, there is the possibility of erratic rains and drizzles in the northwest later on.”
