Met Eireann has forecast a change in our climate in the coming days after the “La Niña” event was declared.

The phenomenon occurs once every few years and disrupts normal weather patterns around the world.

And meteorological experts have said that this may affect Ireland indirectly, as it “intensifies” the North Atlantic jet stream.

Met Eireann said this can bring “cold and unstable conditions”, and shared a map showing an intense explosion from the jet stream hitting Ireland in the coming days.

They wrote on Twitter: “A La Niña event has been declared, how does it affect us? La Niña does not always impact our climate but can intensify the jet from the North Atlantic. A strong jet over Ireland can bring cold and unstable conditions.”

And there are many signs that these conditions will occur over the next week, with cool, wet weather forecast for the next few days.

One forecaster said: “Tuesday will be cool and windy, with sunshine and rain, most of the rains in Ulster, Connacht and West Munster, some heavy in the north and northwest. The highest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees, in to Cool winds from west to northwest, strong along the coasts of Connacht and West Munster.

“More scattered showers Tuesday night, but also clear gusts, especially in the east. Lower temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees, with moderate to cool winds from the west to the northwest.

“Quite cool on Wednesdays and Thursdays, with a mixture of showers and sunny or sunny showers, the most frequent in Ulster, Connacht and West Munster, some of them heavy.

“High temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees. Winds on Wednesday mostly moderate to cool, from west to northwest, but strong on the coasts of Connacht and Ulster, decreasing mostly moderate in the west on Thursday, except in the coasts of the north.

“Little change on Friday. Cool and windy, with patches of sunshine and scattered showers. Winds from the northwest mostly moderate.

“Early indications suggest that next weekend it will be quite cool, with some scattered showers on Saturday, but it will become mostly dry on Sunday.”
