Met Eireann issued a yellow status warning for fog with the entire country set to be hit tonight.

The alert is in effect for all of Ireland from midnight on Sunday until 10 a.m. M. From Monday morning.

It says: “Dense fog with risk of icy fog in some places.”

Driving in fog can be very dangerous and anyone on the road is advised to take precautions.

AA engine experts offer the following tips for driving in foggy conditions:

  • Use your low beams at all times, in addition to your windshield wipers and fog.
  • Familiarize yourself with the front and rear fog lights. Know how to turn them on and off and use them only when appropriate.
  • Beware of other drivers not using headlights.
  • Only drive as fast as conditions allow and keep a greater distance between yourself and the car ahead. Following someone’s taillights can give a false sense of security and is dangerous.
  • If the road has street lights on, you probably don’t need to use your fog lights.
  • Be able to stop within your range of visibility. This is particularly important on highways and expressways where you will be traveling at high speed.

Meanwhile, Met Eireann has confirmed that it will remain ‘very cold’ until the middle of next week, where it will start to become more unstable.

One forecaster said: “A cold and icy start to Sunday with lingering fog throughout the day in parts. It will be a mostly dry day with developing sun where the fog clears and only a few isolated showers on the coastal margins.
