Met Eireann issued an urgent 13-hour weather advisory for four counties as dangerous conditions are expected.
The alert is in effect for Cork, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford from 9pm tonight until 10am Friday.
The national forecaster said there is a risk of “heavy fog” in these regions during this time.
Driving in fog can be very dangerous and anyone on the road is advised to take precautions.
AA engine experts offer the following tips for driving in foggy conditions:
- Use your low beams at all times, in addition to your windshield wipers and fog.
- Familiarize yourself with the front and rear fog lights. Know how to turn them on and off and use them only when appropriate.
- Beware of other drivers not using headlights.
- Only drive as fast as conditions allow and keep a greater distance between yourself and the car ahead. Following someone’s taillights can give a false sense of security and is dangerous.
- If the road has street lights on, you probably don’t need to use your fog lights.
- Be able to stop within your range of visibility. This is particularly important on highways and expressways where you will be traveling at high speed.
