A total of 20 counties are under a yellow state wind warning, as horrible conditions are expected tonight.

The first two alerts are in place for all of Leinster and all of Connacht until 6pm tonight, as gusts of up to 90km / h are expected.

While the second warning is for Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal, and it is until 9pm.

It says: “Strong and gusty winds from south to southwest with gusts of more than 90 km / h.”

Meanwhile, conditions will stabilize somewhat later today and tomorrow, although a lot of wet weather is still expected.

A forecaster for Met Eireann said: “There will be more downpours or longer periods of rain this afternoon and tonight, with more persistent rains in the southwest moving north overnight, clearing once again in the southern half of the country by the morning.

“Overnight temperatures will be between 7 and 10 degrees, dropping to between 4 and 6 degrees around dawn. Moderate to cool winds from the south will remain strong on the coasts.

“Showers or showers for tomorrow Sunday, particularly in the first half of the day in the northern half of the country, with spells of sun and scattered showers in other places. The afternoon temperatures will reach 8 to 11 degrees with moderate to cool winds from the West”.

And as we move into next week, weather experts have warned that it will get colder and drier, risking a return of frost.

A forecaster added: “Rain in the west at dawn Monday, spreading east to all areas during the morning and afternoon. Highs of 12 or 13 degrees, with fresh winds from the southwest, strong on the coasts.

“Cloudy with showers in the west and north on Monday night. A mild and windy night with temperatures that do not drop below 10 degrees.

“Mild, windy and cloudy on Tuesday, with erratic rains in the south and west. Highs of 13 to 15 degrees, with fresh to strong south winds.

“Sunny periods with showers on Wednesday, more frequent in the west and north, with a more persistent period of rain in the northwest later. Morning highs of 9 or 10 degrees, but becomes cooler during the afternoon when a Cold front crosses country. Fresh to strong winds from southwest, veering northwest later. “
