Met Eireann confirmed that snow hit parts of the country last night when videos and images show a white Christmas in Ireland.
A mix of snow and sleet hit higher ground last night during a weather advisory when temperatures dropped below freezing.
The national forecaster also issued a yellow state rain warning for Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford, which will remain in place until 9 a.m. Wednesday.
It says: “Heavy rains can sometimes cause some localized flooding. Total rainfall is generally around 30-40mm, higher in mountainous areas.”
And it will also be cold in the southwest at night, with experts singling out this area as the one with the highest risk of snowfall.
The videos and photos were taken in Munster, but two days of winter rain are promised in the capital this week before the festivities.
Here’s what the Christmas forecast looks like according to Met Eireann:
Today: “We started today mostly dry with periods of sunshine this morning. The cloud will increase with the rain that will spread north tonight. A cold day with highs of only 5 or 6 degrees with a variable light breeze. Outbreaks of rain. Lows of 2 to 4 degrees in the refreshing north winds, which become strong on the coast. “
tomorrow: “A wet and windy start, with the rain slowly clearing through the afternoon and evening. The last rain will not clear until after dark. Highs of 6 or 7 degrees with cool to strong north winds. It becomes mostly dry and clear Wednesday night, with isolated showers in the north. Minimum of -2 to +2 degrees, with a strong frost and risk of frost spots. Moderate winds from the north, easing slightly from the northwest in the morning “.
Good night: “Mostly dry with sunny periods. Clouds will increase during the afternoon with some light showers in the northwest. Highs 5 to 7 degrees, with northwest winds subsiding.
Dry Thursday night with clouds rising from the west. The spells cleared early in the evening and light winds will allow temperatures to drop from -2 to +2 degrees, cooler in the east. Some patches of fog and mist will mean that Rudolf will probably have to drive Santa’s sleigh. “
