People traveling from Ireland to other EU countries will face fewer restrictions after an update to the traffic light system.
The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has elevated Ireland from a red list country to an orange one along with the Canary Islands.
The decision was made following improvements in our 14-day incidence rate and test positivity rate.
Parts of Greece, Norway and Finland also appear in orange, while most of Europe remains in red.
DAA Communications Director Paul O’Kane says it is vital that anyone traveling abroad check the rules in force at their destination.
“Each individual European member state applies its own rules on how it treats people arriving from a red or orange region.
“If people here travel to other European countries, the designation of the Republic of Ireland changed today.
“Last week all three regions of the Republic of Ireland were red. Now they have all turned orange.
“So anyone who is based in Ireland and wants to travel abroad, should check what the rules are in the country of arrival.”
Meanwhile, a leading health expert says people shouldn’t be traveling home from abroad this Christmas.
Public health physician Dr. Gabriel Scally says people should celebrate differently this year to stop the spread of Covid-19.
He says they should do so knowing that the situation should improve with a vaccine available in the New Year.
“The best part is that there is light at the end of the tunnel with a vaccine that comes and goes quickly,” said Dr. Scally.
“So if we could set our minds on getting to spring and the arrival of the vaccine in a large number of doses and just downplay it for Christmas just this once.”
