There are fewer things the Irish love to talk about more than the weather, so it’s no wonder Ireland is making a formal offer to move the European weather forecast center from the UK to Dublin.
As a result of Brexit, the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) will have to relocate from its current location in Reading to a European Member State.
The cabinet today agreed the submission of the government to have the center located in Ireland.
If successful, the center would be in a new facility in Cherrywood, Dublin.
The relocation would result in 250 jobs.
The deadline for submissions is October 1, and the winner will be announced in December 2020.
Ireland faces nine other Member States that are also participating in the competition.
The center is both a research institute and a 24/7 operating service producing weather forecasts for European countries.

It also specializes in forecasting global weather about 2 weeks in advance, as well as producing longer-term forecasts up to a year in advance, with varying degrees of detail, according to its website.
The center has one of the largest supercomputer facilities and meteorological data archives in the world. It also uses an advanced computer modeling technique to analyze observations and predict future weather.
It is an independent intergovernmental organization supported by 34 member states.
Government sources are hopeful that Ireland will succeed in the competition and say it would align with the Irish government’s global strategy for Ireland to increase the country’s “pull factor” for the creation of new green economy jobs.
