A senior infectious disease physician has described Ireland’s move to a level 5 lockdown as a “no-brainer” as the government meets today to make a decision on the NPHET recommendations that dominated the headlines last night.

Professor Sam McConkey has said that the second wave of Covid has been “really shocking” and warned Sunday night that “we have to do something as a nation as we cannot allow the increase to continue.”

The expert said a total shutdown was “a no-brainer” and would “require massive public participation.”

He added: “It is necessary for all political leaders to join in on this and they must keep it simple.”

The three leaders of the coalition parties, Micheal Martin, Leo Varadkar and Eamon Ryan, are expected to meet with Medical Director Dr. Tony Holohan today on their first day back on the health bench to discuss Ireland’s next step.

We’ll bring you the latest on that meeting as it happens on our LIVE blog below:

In summary, Gov.ie says: “At Level 5, the risk to public health means that you will be asked to stay home except to exercise within 5 kilometers of your home.
