Ireland Covid-19 ‘out of control’ situation as NPHET allegedly requests prolonged Level 5 lockdown

Ireland’s Covid-19 situation is currently ‘out of control’ as NPHET has reportedly recommended Level 5 restrictions for six weeks.

Health officials met yesterday to discuss the current coronavirus situation in the country.

And reports this morning suggest that Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tony Holohan issued a stern warning in his advice to Health Minister Stephen Donnelly.

In the letter, it is said that NPHET recommended that we move to level 5 for six weeks, although the schools would remain open, according to the Irish Daily Mail.

It came after Dr. Holohan warned of a “nationwide rapidly deteriorating trajectory” of the coronavirus.

The CMO expressed “extreme concern” about the increased spread of the virus during the last week in particular.

He said the number of positive cases during the past week has increased by 82% compared to the previous seven days, from 3,514 to 6,382.

At a National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) press conference last night, the situation was summed up as “not improving and potentially accelerating.”

Additional restrictions have been in place in Dublin for several weeks, but while some stabilization was detected last week, the past four to five days have seen high case counts.

Dr. Holohan said transmission levels are now so high that in many cases the source of the virus cannot be found.

He said officials have yet to see a “detectable change in the level of behavior of the kind that we would like to see … that is an issue of great concern to us.”

“We have reflected on this and in the usual way we have agreed to advise and provide this advice through the Minister of Health for the Government to consider,” he added.

“We give our advice, the government has to consider that advice in light of a number of other considerations, and come to a balanced assessment of what is the appropriate way to respond as a country to that advice,” he said.

He added that it is clear that the disease “is not under control” and added that many other countries in Europe are experiencing a similar situation.
