There have been another 765 cases of Covid-19 in the Republic of Ireland, the Department of Health confirmed today.

One more person has also died from the virus, bringing the total number of deaths from Covid-19 to 2,205.

There have now been a total of 86,894 coronavirus cases in the Republic of Ireland.

This is because there were 744 new cases of Covid-19 yesterday, a significantly lower number than the previous days.

However, Dr. Tony Holohan, CMO, said that he believes this number was lower as the tests would not have been as prominent on Christmas Day and St. Stephen’s Day.

He delivered a tough message to the public, saying: “If we do not act now to stop the spread of Covid-19, we will not be able to protect those in our society who are most at risk of serious illness or death.

“Stay home, don’t visit friends or family unless you are providing essential care and have no visitors in your home. Follow public health advice. “

Today, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar said that Covid-19’s “sustainable” restrictions could be in place for months until the most vulnerable and health workers are vaccinated.

Mr. Vardkar suggested that the restrictions are likely to be in place for another “few months” and that they should be sustainable rather than lifting and reintroducing restrictions as cases rise and fall.

“There will be a case of telling the Irish people, you know, maybe we should keep these restrictions in place until we have protected our health workers and the most vulnerable,” he said on RTÉ Radio One. Tomorrow Ireland.

“But again, that speaks to a separate issue: if the restrictions are to be in place for an extended period, not a few weeks, but maybe a few months, they must be sustainable.”
