Ireland Christmas Lockdown – NPHET Urgent Meeting Details After Taoiseach Level 5 Update

The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) is meeting today to discuss the worrying spread of Covid-19 in Ireland as we approach Christmas.

The travel restrictions will be eased from tomorrow until early January, but after a warning from Taoiseach Micheal Martin, that could change.

Starting December 18, people can travel anywhere in Ireland and three families can reunite.

But speaking on television, Micheal Martin said the Christmas relaxation of these rules could now end before the January 6 set date.

He revealed on Virgin Media’s Tonight Show that a special Cabinet meeting had been scheduled for Tuesday, December 29, to reassess the situation.

Dr. Tony Holohan, medical director, believes the country is in a “precarious situation” and is heading in the “wrong direction.”

On Wednesday, there were 431 new cases of the virus, 134 of which were in Dublin.

The CMO cautioned: “We are seeing significant and worrying indicators that this disease is moving in the wrong direction, including an increase in positivity rates and the seven- and 14-day incidence, and our five-day average has now risen to 339 cases “.

“Recent international experience has shown how quickly this disease can get out of control.

“These trends are all the more worrisome given the delicate and precarious situation in which we find ourselves; as a country, we are heading into a period of possible general mixing between households and intergenerationals.”

He added: “This is an ideal opportunity for the virus to spread and affect those most vulnerable to its most serious effects.

“Don’t give Covid-19 this chance – limit your contacts, prioritize who you know, and let’s stay tuned so we can get through this together.”

The worsening of Covid-19 rates in Europe has led the Taoiseach to say that it is “pending” for the date.

Inter-county travel reopens this Friday and there are fears that it could lead to a large increase in Covid-19 cases, especially when you factor in the number of loved ones traveling home from overseas regions where rates they are shooting up again.

This was supposed to last until January 6.
