More from Tanaiste
Tànaiste Leo Varadkar has said that some “modest flexibilities” of the current lockdown restrictions will be introduced by April and May.
The Fine Gael leader said the construction industry will be able to operate more freely, while a relaxation of the 5km travel restrictions is also expected to be announced.
During an interview with RTE News At One, Varadkar also spoke about the failure to meet vaccine targets, supply problems, and stated that the government “does not have control of the production and delivery” of the vaccines.
“The vaccine program is moving forward as quickly as possible. As soon as the vaccine arrives, it is usually in people’s arms in a week, sometimes in three days,” he said.
When asked about easing the lockdown restrictions, Varadkar offered some hope for certain sectors.
“What we made very clear in the plan is that we would review the situation in the run-up to April 5. We said that the only type of restrictions that we could see easing in April would be construction, the 5km rule and allow some more outdoor activities.
“That is still the case. Even if the number of vaccines is a little behind, we are making very good progress in terms of suppressing the virus,” he said.
Varadkar added that he believes the delay in vaccine supplies will not prevent Ireland from easing restrictions and that “we only intended to do a moderate easing anyway.”
When asked about the potential for store reopening, the Tànaiste said: “Click and collect is something that could be considered for April” and that “the reopening of non-essential stores is something that is ahead.”
