Ireland will be part of a bid with the United Kingdom to host the World Cup in 2030, it has emerged.
Aoiseach spokesperson Micheál Martin confirmed that Ireland will be part of the offering once it is formally launched.
It came after Prime Minister Boris Johnson revealed that the UK is preparing a bid with Ireland to host the FIFA World Cup later in the decade.
The Taoiseach spokesperson said that “Irish and UK football and government partners are delighted that the UK government has pledged to support a potential bid of five associations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.”
“The Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht Sport and Media will continue to carry out feasibility work, together with its partners, to evaluate the viability of an offer and we look forward to greater commitment and collaboration as we seek to refine our accommodation proposals in the next months.
“Hosting a FIFA World Cup would provide an incredible opportunity to generate tangible benefits for our nations. If the decision is made to submit a bid for the event, we look forward to submitting our host proposals to FIFA and the wider world football community, ”he added.
The FAI has issued a statement saluting the governments of Ireland and the United Kingdom for committing to support a bid by five associations to host the 2030 World Cup.
Together with the football associations of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, the FAI issued a statement that read: “The football associations and government partners of the United Kingdom and Ireland are delighted that the UK government has agreed to committed to supporting a possible candidacy of five associations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
“We will continue to conduct feasibility work to assess the feasibility of a bid before FIFA formally opens the process in 2022. Hosting a FIFA World Cup would provide an incredible opportunity to generate tangible benefits for our nations.
“If the decision is made to submit a bid for the event, we look forward to presenting our organizational proposals to FIFA and the global football community at large.”
In an interview with the Sun newspaper, Johnson announced that he will work with the Martin government to secure the rights to hold the 2030 World Cup.
He said that Chancellor Rishi Sunak will announce millions in funding for the joint UK and Ireland launch to host the 2030 World Cup in tomorrow’s UK budget.
“We are very, very interested in bringing football home in 2030. I think it’s the right place,” Johnson said. “It is the home of football, it is the right time. It will be something absolutely wonderful for the country, “he added.
The prime minister said there are a “large number of existing stadiums” in Ireland and the UK that will support the bid.
“Precise details of the participation of each nation, including the cities and stadiums that will participate, have not yet been determined. A bid from five associations provides a unique opportunity for towns and cities across Ireland and the UK to participate and benefit from the organization of the tournament, ”he added.
He said those involved in work on the offering include the Football Association of England, the Football Association of Scotland, the Football Association of Wales, the Football Association of Ireland and the Football Association of Ireland, and the government of the United Kingdom, the Government of Scotland, the Assembly Government of Wales, the Executive of Northern Ireland, the Irish Government of Ireland and Sport of the United Kingdom.
“The FIFA World Cup is the biggest and most impactful event in the world. Any bidding process to host the tournament is always highly competitive and we look forward to developing our hosting proposal and working with FIFA to showcase our incredible hosting assets and credentials. The bidders will only be known once FIFA formally opens the bidding process in 2022, ”he added.
