The inter-county travel ban and a cap on the number of households allowed to mingle went into effect at midnight last night.
As part of the additional restrictions announced by the government Tuesday, people are not only allowed to travel within their county, unless they travel back to their place of residence after the Christmas holidays.
Travel between counties for essential reasons such as work, family care, or educational purposes is still allowed.
Starting today, only households will be allowed to mingle with another household, reducing the number from three, to combat the growing number of infections the country is experiencing.
As of January 1, visits are not allowed except for essential family reasons, such as caring for children, the elderly or vulnerable people, or as part of a bubble of support.
Up to 25 people can attend a wedding until January 2 inclusive. This is reduced to six guests as of January 3.
Churches and places of worship can only have private and online worship. Up to 10 mourners can attend a funeral.
Whereas hotels can only serve food to guests.
This morning, HSE CEO Paul Reid asked people to review their New Year’s plans to “stay safe” as he confirmed that the number of daily tests carried out is the highest ever. history, 23,000.
