One young Cork film-maker has produced an amazing video document of Leeside in the midst of Lockdown.
Daniel Corcoran of city-based Rollover Films found he had a bit of time on his hands after his family’s bread-and-butter business of shooting wedding videos came to a complete halt.
But rather than binge-watch Netflix, Daniel decided to take his camera out onto the streets of Cork to catch a fascinating, inspirational look at how people and communities have been coming together to help the vulnerable and keep spirits high.
One of the first people Daniel called was James Leonard, the Corkman who won the hearts of the nation recently when he appeared on Tommy Tiernan’s chat-show to talk about how he had turned his life around from serious drug addiction to become a highly qualified youth and social worker.
“I saw James on the Tommy Tiernan show and I thought he’d be the first man to contact because he knows so much about what’s going on in the city,” film-maker Daniel Corcoran told CorkBeo.
“I got in touch with him on twitter and he was great, he put me in touch with Caitriona in Penny Dinners and she allowed me to tag along with them for a few hours to see them at work.”
James Leonard also appears in the video and provides the voice-over for the 2-minute long film which Daniel says was done purely to document a city during one of its toughest times in its long history.
“I wanted to pay tribute to the people who are helping, to the spirit of the city,” he says.
“I thought it should be documented, these are very tough times for Cork but if you look at how people are responding, you can see a lot to be proud of there.”
The resulting film was shot under pretty tough circumstances.
“Obviously I had to be very careful with my social distancing, we had to work around people and make sure we didn’t cause any problems or get in their way. But it was a great experience,” says Daniel.
“Now I just want as many people to see it as possible. It would be great to let people know how we are coping and coming together.”
We reckon Daniel and James have done a great job – and this is a document of Cork during these very tough times which will live long after the lockdown ends.
