This footage provides an inside look at the celebrations following a historic Galway club championship win that sparked a Covid-19 outbreak.
Players and supporters are seen chanting and chanting in a packed room as they celebrated Moycullen GAA’s great championship win, a first for the club.
And exclusive photos show them drinking in a packed parish pub as part of the celebrations.
A source from the club said: “Our guys went drinking on Sunday and Monday. They went to pubs and had some drinks, but we had no control over that.
“The county final got everyone out, maybe the alcohol numbed the senses. It’s been a harsh reality for people.”
The club confirmed this week that members of its winning senior team tested positive for the virus, just over a week after the celebrations.
The packed event, where people can be heard singing, was not sanctioned by the GAA as the club canceled its own celebrations.
There were no masks in evidence during the party that was filmed.
Fans and some players celebrated in a local pub, which seemed to ignore social distance guidelines, and on the street after the club’s win over rivals Mountbellew-Moylough last Sunday.
The county was under Level 2 restrictions at the time, allowing pubs to serve alcohol with protective measures in place.
This week, Moycullen had to remove all of its players from the county panels for ages 20 and under due to the growing number of positive Covid cases in the area.
Moycullen President Paul Clancy said in a statement Tuesday: “Upon learning of these cases at the club, we acted immediately and canceled all activities to allow time for all necessary actions to be taken with regard to tracking. of contacts.
“Prior to this, the club had canceled club celebrations after our final county win.”
Monaghan’s doctor Ilona Duffy GP said that people who meet up after games are a big problem.
She told RTE News: “The GAA is doing everything according to the guidelines, I think we need to go a step further.
“I think the government should cancel the games.”
