A grieving husband and father spoke of their undying love for his wife and son, who died in tragic circumstances in Dublin last week, at his funeral in Ballina today.

Darren Coleman told the restricted gathering of mourners present at St. Muredach Cathedral and those online that: “Henry and Nicola were everything to me and I will remember them forever.”

Nicola, a pediatric nurse attached to Crumlin Children’s Hospital, was buried alongside baby Henry in Leigue Cemetery after the Requiem Mass for the rest of their gentle souls.

The young mother and her baby were found dead, in separate locations, in the Lucan area of Dublin more than a week ago.

Gardai treats the deaths as a family tragedy.

At today’s Requiem Mass, Darren Coleman, a native of the Knockmore area, said that he and Nicola had been together since they were 17 years old and had spent very few days apart during this time.

“I loved Nicola and my eyes lit up every time I saw her,” he continued.

“We just enjoy being in each other’s company.”

Coleman also paid a moving tribute to his son Henry, who came into their lives last February and with whom he immediately falls in love.

Fr Tom Doherty, the main celebrant, said that hearts were paralyzed by shared grief and shared loss since news of the deaths broke.

He admitted he had no answers and added: “I’m trying to make sense of it all. This is one of the occasions when words are not only inappropriate but useless. “

P. Doherty consoled the mourners saying that “death is not the end of the friendship and affection that unite people throughout their lives.”

He went on to describe Nicola as “a caring and considerate person” and said that Henry was “a little boy full of love and smiles.”

“It goes without saying that none of us today will ever forget them,” added Fr Doherty.
