An image of two penguins standing “fin to fin” won a photography award.
Tobias Baumgaertner won the Ocean Photography Awards Community Choice Award for the image, which was taken in St Kilda, Australia.
The photo of two little penguins, also known as fairy penguins, went viral after Baumgaertner posted it on Instagram in March, claiming that both birds had been widowed.
“These two fairy penguins perched on a rock overlooking the Melbourne skyline were there for hours, fin at fin,” Baumgaertner wrote on Instagram.
“A volunteer approached me and told me that the white woman was an old woman who had lost her partner, and apparently also the young man on the left.
“Since then they meet regularly, console each other and stay together for hours, watching the dancing lights of the nearby city.
The overall winner of the competition, organized by the Oceanographic Magazine, was Nadia Aly, who photographed mobula rays in Baja California Sur in Mexico.
The six winners won prizes in seven prizes, reduced from more than 3,000 initial competition submissions.
