Gardaí is pursuing a “defined line of investigation” after up to 30 tonnes of waste was illegally dumped down a rural road in Co Louth.
The truck believed to have been used to transport the garbage to the secluded site has been seized by a gardaí who arrived at the site as the waste was dumped.
It included household and construction waste, estimated in the region at 25-30 tons.
The truck has been taken to a safe place for a technical examination.
The alleged truck driver fled through nearby fields, but despite no arrests so far, Gardaí said they are following a defined line of investigation.
The lane, off Doyle’s Fort Road, Dundalk, has now been sealed by the Louth County Council and council staff or contractors will begin proper disposal and disposal of the waste next week.
The incident happened last night around 8:30 p.m.
Garda Superintendent Gerry Curley of Dundalk Garda Station confirmed that an investigation is underway.
“We are working to identify who is responsible,” he said.
The dumping has been condemned by local Sinn Féin TD Ruairi O’Murchu.
“It is absolutely reprehensible,” he said. “We have had a lot of voluntary organizations like Tidy Towns and resident associations doing fabulous work and it is absolutely undermined by actions like this.”
The area has now been sealed off by Louth County Council workers.
