GAA President John Horan said the association felt it had no choice but to pause all club matches after post-match trouble scenes were highlighted.
The GAA and LGFA have halted all club matches “with immediate effect and until further notice” as great uncertainty surrounds the 2020 inter-county championships in light of the latest NPHET recommendations and the expected decision from the US government. go to Level 3.
While all encounters have been suspended, training can continue as long as participants adhere to all relevant public health guidelines.
The GAA stated that the post-game celebrations and lack of social distancing at certain events have been “disappointing and troublesome,” and Horan highlighted his disappointment with the latest turn of events.
“We are very disappointed to have made this decision,” he told RTÉ Sport. “It caused difficulties to do so, but I think we made the right decision. Public health is the most important thing.
“There were problems with the implementation of the organization of our events, and particularly the post-match events that were happening.
“We felt like we had no choice but to shut things down. The actual games weren’t really the problem, it was the post-match element.
Cork GAA issued a statement today asking its supporters not to violate safety guidelines after video emerged showing crowds celebrating after Blackrock County threw the final victory on Sunday, while there have been other cases of fans who failed to maintain social distancing after the win.
Horan explained that the decision was made in part after recent conversations with then-acting chief medical officer, Dr. Ronan Glynn.

“Dr. Glynn and I had a conversation during the week where he called for additional organization-wide compliance,” Horan said.
“It was based on that conversation that we sent our communication to our members and unfortunately we did not get what we needed.
“We communicated during the week, but we felt that that message was simply not accepted.”
Bars and social clubs will also close, but “training will continue to be allowed in accordance with the guidelines outlined for the relevant levels in the Government’s National Framework for Living with Covid-19 and the relevant guidelines in the Six Counties.”
