Limerick pitching manager John Kiely has said Munster’s first consecutive titles in the county since 1981 are “tainted a bit” due to the exclusion of the remaining 10 of his squad from Semple Stadium when they won four points over Waterford.
imerick had to summon a huge effort in the fourth quarter to ditch Waterford and add another Munster crown to the league title they won three weeks earlier.
But while he was satisfied with the result, Kiely’s thoughts turned to home and to the players who could not make the trip due to the regulations that, according to him, were enforced by the state.
“There are 10 players at home, which in my opinion is totally and absolutely unacceptable given that I have 20 reporters in front of me,” he said at the post-match press conference in Thurles.
“I am quite offended by the situation that they have put us in and would appeal to the authorities at the government level, at the national level, to put an end to this nonsense and allow the panels of all the county teams to be together.
“Because that unit involved with the 36 players is crucial and our players should not be at home when we have more than 200 people in a stadium watching the game.
“Our players should be here with their colleagues, so as far as I’m concerned, that (Munster Cup) will not be released until Tuesday night when we get to practice and have our full panel of players.”
Kiely said she had made statements on the matter and feels there is no risk associated with allowing an additional 10 people to attend when they are so invested.
Under the regulations, only those who are part of the 26 match-day teams are allowed into the stadium, along with 12 backroom officials.
With delegates, officials, broadcasting, and the media, along with these 76 (38 from each county), the numbers rise to more than 200.
“I do not agree with the premise that we can more than 200 people in a stadium who were here watching this game when my 10 players were at home this morning, training number one to keep their load at the equivalent level of the other players in the panel to make sure if they are called up next week they don’t get injured, “Kiely said.
“I don’t think there is an inherent risk with 10 of those who come with the rest of the group in their own cars, like the rest of the group, and sit in the stands and watch the game and then they are part of it. I am not. according to him, I am firmly opposed, I have made statements about it, they have listened to me, but the situation still stands. “
Kiely acknowledged that the form of victory was different from previous games against Clare and Tipperary.
“You are not going to play your best every day that you come out and you have yet to find a way to win. I am delighted with the way our guys kept their heads, kept their composure and worked so hard in that final quarter to watch. the match “.
