Katie Taylor has paid tribute to Miriam Gutierrez after the Spaniard somehow withstood the barrage of punches from the undisputed lightweight champion and stood tall for 10 grueling two-minute rounds.
The result at Wembley Arena was never out of doubt for Bray’s Pride, but when he dropped Gutierrez to the canvas at the end of the fourth round, most observers were sure that the referee or his corner would have to intervene.
In the end, Taylor moved to 17-0 via a unanimous points decision, inflicting a first professional loss on his outclassed but brave opponent.
“I threw everything at her except the kitchen sink. I couldn’t get her out of there,” Taylor said afterward.
“She is tough as nails, so she recognizes it. She endured and was there to fight until the end. She is obviously big and strong and that showed tonight.”
Taylor flew out of his corner for the first round and surprised Gutierrez with a series of combinations.
“I thought it was important for me to seal my authority from the first round. She had not fought outside of Spain and was out of the ring for a year,” Taylor said.
“I thought it would be nice to start fast. I thought I would get her out of there in a moment. She held on and kept taking shots. In fact, she was very dangerous when she was shooting. I had to.” be a little more cautious later in the fight. Overall, it was a great performance. “
Despite his absolute dominance of the lightweight ranks, Taylor has only recorded six stoppages in his 17 fights to date.
“Obviously I would have loved to have a strike there tonight. I haven’t had a strike in a long time. These girls are hard to hurt, they are very strong and durable.
“I did everything I could to get the stoppage, but she held on and I have to be happy with a points win.
“I’m going home with all the belts and I’m still the undisputed champion. I’m still undefeated and this is a great end to the year.”
