A hunter who died in a freak accident when he was attacked by a deer that had come to feed in North Cork on Tuesday afternoon has been described as a “beautiful man and a wonderful father.”

Ger Withers (45) from Liscarroll in Co Cork went to Duhallow Hunt Kennels to feed the deer as part of his regular routine.

When he could not return home, his wife Maria raised the alarm. They found him unconscious on the ground in the kennels.

Mr. Wither is the father of seven-year-old twins and a three-year-old boy. His friend Catherine Power said that he was a wonderful person who would be deeply missed by all who knew him.

“He was a magnificent man. A wonderful father and hunter. He was a young man who has left a very good legacy in the hunting fraternity. The whole country is in shock.

It happened out of nowhere. You can’t anticipate something like this happening. We are devastated. We have lost a good man and a good hunter. “

Meanwhile, gardaí and paramedics went to the scene. An HSA investigation is underway into the incident, which is being treated as a tragic accident. The body of the deceased was transferred to the morgue at Cork University Hospital.

The coroner has been notified and an investigation is likely to take place next year. Preparations for Mr. Withers’s funeral have not yet been finalized.

Withers was considered an expert hunter and hound who hunted with Old English Hounds. He had hunted his pack of English dogs for 14 seasons.
