The HSE chief is concerned that many people think May 18 is a “great time.”
Senior health officials have gathered to discuss easing the restrictions starting next week.
Monday, May 18, is expected to usher in a gradual reopening of the country.
If given the green light, groups of four can gather, DIY centers will reopen, and sports like golf and tennis will resume.
The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) has met to discuss the easing of restrictions and its advice will go to the Cabinet.
Speaking after the meeting, NPHET member Dr. Cillian de Gascun says the recent Covid-19 numbers have been encouraging.
“I think the steps that have been described in the press sessions during the week have been largely positive from the point of view of the number of cases admitted to intensive care, but no decisions have been made at this time,” said Dr. from Gascun.
But the HSE chief is concerned that people have high hopes on Monday.
Paul Reid says any relief from the restrictions would only be small.
“We would be concerned to see an increase in people who think 18 is a great time.”
“The 18th is not a great time. We have several weeks ahead for the government to make various decisions in terms of restrictions.”
“But the 18th is not a great time, it is a minor step along the way.”
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said he is increasingly confident that the country will begin easing the restrictions starting next week.
But he has warned that things are not going to return to normal immediately.
Varadkar said that it will be months, not weeks, before the EU trip returns and that handshakes are over for now, and that personal hygiene and hand disinfection are more important than ever.
We plan to find out tomorrow what the plan will be for Monday.
