HSE Outlines New Arrangements for GP Vaccination Plan

HSE is committed to improving the timing of confirmation notices to GPs regarding order numbers and delivery dates for vaccine doses.

He accepted that 48 hours is not enough for clinics to plan properly.

The HSE, which was responding to concerns raised by GPs and the Irish Medical Organization, said that once a GP receives confirmation of a delivery, there will be no change to delivery dates or requirements.

It described a number of “improved fixes” related to its GP vaccination program, including increased staffing of the GP vaccination team.

Dedicated relationship managers have also been appointed along with the establishment of a regular communications newsletter for GPs.

The HSE said it is still on track to deliver the first doses of vaccines by the end of this week for those 85 and older to more than 1,300 GP practices.

He said 542 GP offices have received a first dose delivery and more clinics have joined the centralized vaccination clinic at DCU in Dublin.

Delivery and ordering issues remain to be resolved for 23 GP clinics that have more than 200 patients over the age of 70.

GP practices with a very small number of patients older than 70 years are asked to make arrangements with other GPs.

A total of 65 GP consultations have been unable to make such “buddy” arrangements or take advantage of GP-run clinics, but the HSE said these clinics will receive vaccine deliveries next week.

GPs are asked to identify home and bed confined patients so that the National Ambulance Service can provide the vaccine, which will administer the vaccine at the patients’ homes.
