Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has criticized handball’s controversial new ruling in the Premier League.

The Premier League has received a lot of criticism from fans, experts, players and coaches in recent times. This coincides with its new regulations on handball in matches of the highest category.

If handball penalties continue as they are, we are on track to have more shots from the point this campaign than in any other Premier League season.

Penalties are imposed if the ball hits the arm of a player that is positioned far from his body. Currently, the distance between player and ball is not taken into account when making decisions.

This has led to some very condemned penalties being awarded in the early weeks of the season.

In an interview with Manchester evening newsGuardiola gave his opinion on the new handball ruling:

“Football is an unpredictable game, the hand of Dier, that of United, against Arsenal.

“Everyone knows if there is a deliberate hand. A guy who jumps on the box to make a detour and can go to hand; they give you a penalty, that’s pretty ridiculous.

“But hopefully the referees and the coaches can decide what’s best for the game, to be more fair.”

Guardiola’s men have had a rocky start to the new Premier League season. They overcame a late attack to earn a 2-1 win over the Wolves in their first game.

They then suffered a damaging 5-2 loss to Leicester City. Jamie Vardy scored a hat-trick and three of Leicester’s goals came on penalties.

Guardiola’s team travels to face Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United on Saturday at Elland Road.
