McFabulous dispelled doubts about how good it could be with a silky smooth victory at the Relkeel Hurdle, pushed by jockey Harry Cobden to give coach Paul Nicholls even more success on a memorable day.
Cobden was remarkably wide throughout the entire race at McFabulous, which means he had to take the final corner four horses wide, and ITV Racing’s Mick Fitzgerald said “if you wanted to show someone how not to ride Kempton, this is it. . I couldn’t believe how wide it was. “

The rider admitted that it was not the plan and was able to “get out of trouble” thanks to the talent of the horse he was riding.
“I was there for a bit of light, but I didn’t anticipate that going that wide and going four on the corner wasn’t ideal, but luckily I had a lot of horse under me and he got me out of trouble,” he said. said. “I never worried because I always had the confidence that I had a lot of horses under me and could afford to go that far and still get my way.”
Fitzgerald said Cobden’s admission showed why “he has a real future,” adding: “The only way to improve is to be self-critical and he himself knows that was not ideal, but he had to.”

McFabulous was reduced to 12 (out of 16) by the sponsors, who are not runners, no bet for Betfair’s Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle, and Cobden is confident that the Giraffa Racing-owned runner would stay 3 meters despite being considered he did not get the trip at Newbury when he was defeated by Thyme Hill and Paisley Park.
“I’m sure it stays three miles, I was past the road here,” Cobden said. “The main thing today is that he has not had a difficult race, I have not gone for him and I have tried to save so much [as possible] for the next day.
“The race at Newbury was tough and I’m still scratching my head about it now. Maybe he just has a decent run and if we’re going to race the Stayers’ Hurdle, maybe we’ll try to cover it up and come up with a race. “
Cobden added that Aintree instead of Cheltenham could suit McFabulous better, adding: “A flat track would probably do him good. I wouldn’t say I couldn’t go to Cheltenham. “
