The medical director has urged the public to continue the level 5 coronavirus restrictions, which have been in place for nearly two weeks.
Dr. Tony Holohan said some progress is clearly being made, but it is too early to say that the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) was satisfied with where we are and where we are going.
The number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in the past seven days dropped by 33% compared to the previous seven days.
The number of people being treated at the hospital dropped to 303 patients at 8pm yesterday, which was 349 at the same point last week and 24 less than at the same time yesterday.
The number of patients in intensive care has remained stable at 44 during the last three days.
The latest overnight figures from the Health Services Executive show that the hospitals with the most Covid-19 patients are Naas General Hospital – 32, Tallaght University Hospital – 31 and Limerick University Hospital. with 26.
The latest HSE figures are as of 8pm last night.
The 14-day incidence rate of the disease is down 20% to 248 per 100,000 from a peak of 310 per 100,000 a week ago.
GPs are also noticing a downward trend in the numbers coming forward requesting referrals for Covid-19 testing.
However, there is still a long way to go to suppress the virus and the Medical Director is urging the public to continue.
Dr. Holohan noted that we still had about 800 new Covid-19 cases confirmed yesterday, a far cry from the 50 to 100 cases per day that have been reported.
He also highlighted two key concerns.
First of all, the fact that although the 14-day disease incidence rate in Dublin is below the national average, it is not falling as drastically as you would like.
Second, he highlighted the increase in the incidence of diseases in the age group over 65 years.
The number of deaths from Covid-19 tripled to 109 last month compared to September.
Meanwhile, Ireland’s 14-day cumulative incidence rate of Covid-19 per 100,000 population is now lower than 20 out of 31 European countries, according to yesterday’s European Center for Disease Control.
