The risk of a Covid-19 patient dying in intensive care in the Republic is less than half that in the United Kingdom, according to data from the National Public Health Emergency Team (Nphet).
As of July, ICU mortality in the Republic was 17%, compared to 24.8% in the North and 40.4% in the UK.
Dr. Vida Hamilton, HSE Group Leader for Acute Hospitals, said the numbers show how reducing demand through good public health behaviors translates into lives saved.
Ireland, along with Finland, is one of two European countries where there is negative growth in the incidence of the virus, Deputy Medical Director Dr Des Hickey said at the Nphet briefing. In more than half of the European countries, the incidence has doubled in the last week.
Over the past week, Ireland’s ranking in Europe for the incidence of Covid-19 has dropped from 17 to 24, he noted.
“Tier 5 efforts over the past two weeks have further reduced community transmission and disease incidence in Ireland,” according to Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan. “However, now is not the time to be complacent. We must keep reducing this disease, we must keep going. “
Incidence
He praised a “drastic reduction” in cases among the 19 to 24 age group in the last two weeks, where the incidence dropped from 450 to 150 per 100,000 people.
“They have also cut their contacts in half in the last five weeks. We must all recognize the efforts of our young people and I thank them ”.
Nphet reported the death of three other Covid-19 patients. This brings the total number of deaths related to the disease to 1,933.
Nphet also reported 591 other confirmed Covid-19 cases, bringing the total number of cases to 64,046. The new cases include 120 in Dublin, 75 in Donegal, 50 in Cork, 46 in Kerry, 44 in Limerick, with the remaining 256 cases spread across 20 other counties.
The breeding number, which measures how many people a confirmed case infects, has dropped to between 0.7 and 0.9, according to Professor Philip Nolan, chair of the Epidemiological Modeling Advisory Group of Ireland.
A reproduction number less than 1 means that an epidemic is disappearing; a number greater than 1 indicates that it is spreading.
“This is a testament to our collective effort to stop the spread of the virus and it is very good news,” said Professor Nolan. “We may be improving now, but it depends on whether we continue like this. If we continue to use this time to reduce the infection, we will be in a good position within four weeks. “
Length of stay
The average length of stay of a Covid-19 patient in the ICU is 17.8 days, authorities revealed.
Lower case numbers can be reduced, “more value we can get out of that,” Dr. Holohan said.
Officials could then analyze what kinds of additional measures were necessary after December 1 to ensure that the spread of the disease was limited while easing restrictions while “preserving” economic activity. While officials were considering Christmas on an ongoing basis, they weren’t in a position to give advice at this time.
However, Nphet did not anticipate changing its advice on shutting down non-essential retailers during the six-week period of Level 5 restrictions, it said. A review of the current measures is planned after four weeks, but “we do not anticipate changing our advice during the six weeks.”
