Goshen returned to Champion Hurdle with a destructive 22-length hit at Betway Kingwell Hurdle, leaving Gary Moore ecstatic after a turn of luck. after a torrid 11-month spell for his stable star.
Since defeating Jamie Moore with Triumph Hurdle glory at his mercy, the five-year-old has failed to show that same bright spark in three subsequent starts. It was bitterly disappointing when he was last of ten riders at Cheltenham last time, but on Saturday he proved that he has revitalized, in part aided by his coach who took over some of the driving duties this week.
Saturday’s performance showcased the same surprising natural talent from his youth days, but this time in a more confident way, as the once frenzied leader this time took a prominent position, following the Navajo Pass.
Watch Goshen take down his Kingwell Hurdle rivals
As Song For Someone was asked to be a favorite for his effort, Moore’s ace hurdler was crossing and finally he pushed for a big lead to earn quotes as short as 9-2 for his Cheltenham Festival goal.
“You can’t believe how happy I am,” Moore said, speaking off the track. “They were probably quick enough, but Jamie had the good sense to sit on it. There are two miles around there and I probably want two stiff, but I’m over the moon. It seems to have returned.
“All I wanted was for him to get over the last thing and get the job done. I think he had a strange accident [in the Triumph] and I’ve never seen anything like it in my life and I hope I never see it again. It’s just one of those things.
“I’ve done a few different things, as anyone would have done to get the best out of the horse, it seems like it could have helped. I’ve ridden it a bit and it certainly gets used to carrying a lot of weight.
“People don’t know how much that meant to me. I know he’s not the Champion Hurdle, but it meant a lot to see the horse come back. “

“title =” Gary Moore (right): “I’m not taking anything from Goshen today. He deserves it.” “class =” js-imageLoader “data-at-xn =” https: //www.rp-assets .com / images / news / 2020/09/25/82921-medium.jpeg “data-br-n =” https://www.rp-assets.com/images/news/2020/09/25/82921- medium.jpeg “data-br-m =” https://www.rp-assets.com/images/news /2020/09/25/82921-large.jpeg “data-br-w =” https: // www.rp-assets.com/images/news/2020/09/25/82921-large.jpeg “data- br-xw = “https://www.rp-assets.com/images/news/2020/09 /25/82921-large.jpeg” onclick = “return false; “>
Next month, Goshen will look to emulate the likes of Bula, Alderbrook, Hors La Loi III, and most recently Katchit by completing the Kingwell-Champion Hurdle double.
A clash between Honeysuckle and Epatante was more than enough to count down, but Moore firmly believes that the first day of the Cheltenham Festival is no longer a two-horse race with Goshen now firmly in the picture.
“I certainly hope it is,” Moore said. “You have the right to risk now with what you have done here.
“I always wonder if the horses underperformed, like Song For Someone, but I’m not taking anything away from Goshen today. He deserves it. Cheltenham won’t be easy, but I haven’t gotten him out of the house since the last time he raced so you’d think he has to step up.
“Fortunately, he is a fairly light-winded horse, but he must surely improve his physical condition, as there is nothing like running.”
Aintree’s schedule for Song For Someone after the disappointment
An offer from Champion Hurdle may not be on the cards for Song For Someone, with coach Tom Symonds now thinking of tackling the Aintree Hurdle.
“It’s disappointing, but I’m delighted to see Goshen back,” he said. “The terrain is hard work for him, he was giving weight and they are not that far from qualifications. I’m disappointed, but I wasn’t meant to be on this track.
“He stayed in the end, but Aidan [Coleman, jockey] he’s not convinced he wants it as deep as this.
On whether it would be preferable to go to Aintree rather than Cheltenham, he added: “I probably would. We would like to find better terrain as Aidan just said his jumps are not as skilled in this terrain. I think it’s better than this, It’s a hit with a horse that has returned to form. However, I wouldn’t rule out Cheltenham just yet. “
Navajo Pass finished 19 lengths behind Song For Someone in third place, while Esprit Du Large was the only runner of the six to be stopped.
