Hero Galway fishermen Patrick and Morgan Oliver participated in another heroic rescue this morning.
The couple were fishing when the alarm was raised that a swimmer had gotten into trouble near Salthill.
After a member of the public raised the alarm, the heroic couple spotted the man taking refuge in Palmer’s Rock about 200 meters off the coast of Salthill.
They took him aboard their fishing boat and brought him back to the Galway docks. Meanwhile, the Galway lifeboat was removed.
The man was taken to the lifeboat station where he received treatment for symptoms of hypothermia until an ambulance arrived.
The deputy launch authority, Seán Óg Leydon, says that many people who have started swimming in the sea this year during the Covid lockdown may not realize the dangers of swimming in winter.
“The sea is a great resource for us but we have to respect it and respect our limits. Fortunately, this swimmer made his way to a place where he could rest and wait for help. “
Patrick Oliver, 38, and his son Morgan, 18, were hailed for their role in saving the two women in August.
Sara Feeney, 23, and Ellen Glynn, 17, had made the five-mile trip to Furbo Beach around 8 p.m. to go paddling on what was a beautiful, warm summer afternoon.
But the concern arose around 9:30 p.m. when they were no longer visible from the beach and a full-scale alert was issued at 10 p.m.
Irish Coast Guard helicopters from Shannon and Sligo searched throughout the night along with several lifeboat crews from Galway, Aran, Doolin and Costelloe Bay, and several private leisure and work boats joined the search at dawn.
But the father and son correctly calculated their location off the Aran Islands using weather and tidal information.
