Heavy snowfall in many parts as yellow snow and ice warning remains in place

Heavy snowfalls have left some roads in the west of the country impassable tonight.

There is a state yellow weather advisory for snow, sleet, hail, and ice for all counties in the Republic, along with Fermanagh, and parts of Tyrone, Armagh, and Down.

The warning will remain in place until noon on Sunday.

During the night there will be a strong generalized frost with some patches of ice, as temperatures will drop to between 0 and -4 ° C.

Tomorrow will start with a lot of cold and ice, while the winter rains will continue throughout the morning with more accumulations possible.

Bantry / Drimoleague Road (R586) is closed west of Drimoleague following a serious automobile collision.

The Kerry County Council says the Conor Pass northeast of Dingle is impassable, as are sections of the N59 near Clifden in Co Galway.

Gardaí advises avoiding Wicklow Gap and Sally Gap due to icy conditions.

Motorists are reminded that it can take up to 10 times longer to stop a vehicle on icy roads. Anyone driving in icy conditions should make sure to slow down and stay clear of whoever is in front.

Met Éireann forecaster Andrew Doran-Sherlock says snow may not stick everywhere, but people everywhere will need to keep an eye out for ice.

“Even where there are not very large accumulations or where there is more dust, at low temperatures there will be icy conditions on the roads and highways, so people will have to be careful.”

Doran-Sherlock said winter conditions appear to continue into tomorrow in parts.
