A heartbroken mother who lost her entire family in a car accident this summer has said that her Christmas wish is for families to appreciate their children.

On August 20, Geraldine Mullan and her husband John, their 14-year-old son Tomás and their 6-year-old daughter Amelia were involved in a tragic accident.

The car they were traveling in sank at Lough Foyle at Quigley’s Point in Donegal after being hit by wet and windy weather.

He landed face down in the water, which means Geraldine was able to escape, but the rest of her family couldn’t.

Later, divers found older brother Tomas with his arms around his little sister.

‘TELL THE PEOPLE YOU LOVE THEM’

Speaking to Miriam O’Callaghan on Prime Time, she said she wishes she could go back in time to prevent the tragedy from happening.

Geraldine said; “I can’t turn the clock back. I wish it was August 19 and things were different, but I can’t change what happened on August 20, but somehow, especially as we get closer. Until this holiday season, yes my Christmas gift to John, Tomás and Amelia is that more children get hugs and kisses from their moms and dads.

“If more people tell their loved ones that they love each other, because they didn’t know that August 20 was going to be the last day they would tell John, Tomás and Amelia that they loved them.

“My message is simple. Remember how precious life is, cherish every moment and tell your loved ones that you love them.”

FOREVER GRATEFUL

Geraldine said she will be eternally grateful to the people who rescued her, particularly Kevin Barr of the Coast Guard who kept her in the water when he begged him to let her go with her family.

She said: “I had lost all hope at that moment Miriam. I knew my family was gone and I just wanted to be with them.

“And I did. I asked him a couple of times to let me go. And, you know, Kevin was very brave.

“He hugged me and apologized because he knew they were gone too.

“And he just said, I’m so sorry, Geraldine, I can’t let you go. You know? And me, I’m here today for Kevin and the work of all those people who worked so hard that night to get me out of the water.

“That’s why my dad, you know, referred to all of them in unison as my guardian angels.”

‘ONE DAY AT A TIME’

She added that she still has hope: “I take one day at a time, sometimes it’s an hour at a time, but I will never lose hope Miriam, you know, like I said, John, Tomás and Amelia may not be physically with me, but they are definitely with me in spirit, they are in my heart.

“And that’s where they will stay forever. I will love them for the rest of my days.

“You know, I tell them every day that I still love them and I always will, you know, so I will never lose hope.”
