Chelsea have announced the signing of German international Kai Havertz to a five-year contract.

The 21-year-old attacking midfielder has moved to Stamford Bridge from Bayer Leverkusen for a fee that will increase to a maximum of £ 70 million.

“I am very happy and proud to be here,” Havertz told the club’s website.

“For me it is a dream come true to play for a great club like Chelsea and I can’t wait to meet all the players and coaches. Yes, I am very happy to be here!”

Leverkusen gave Havertz permission to meet with Chelsea on Friday, and Germany’s team bosses also allowed him to leave the national team camp.

Chelsea manager Marina Granovskaia added: “Kai is one of the best players of his age in world football, so we are very happy that his future is at Chelsea.”

“He has a proven pedigree in one of the best leagues in Europe, he plays for the German national team and is a dynamic and exciting talent.

“We are delighted to be able to add his versatility and quality to the squad before the season begins.”

The deal means that the £ 72m trade from Spanish goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga to Chelsea in 2018 will remain the Blues’ record signing.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has propped up a hugely impressive transfer window for the Blues, with coach Frank Lampard backed to usher in a new era of Stamford Bridge.

Prolific German forward Timo Werner, Ajax’s Hakim Ziyech and Leicester’s English left-back Ben Chilwell have all come to West London in big deals.

French Under-21 defender Malang Sarr has great promise after signing a free transfer, but will be loaned out, while Brazilian stalwart Thiago Silva arrived from Paris St Germain.

Chelsea’s summer spending will now go above £ 200 million.

The Blues have overcome the transfer ban and the defeat of the talisman Eden Hazard to Real Madrid last summer, with new manager Lampard impressing in a challenging first year up front.

The former England and Chelsea midfielder secured a fourth place in the Premier League and Champions League qualification in his first campaign as manager, and has now received significant backing for his team’s Stamford Bridge review.
