One of the hand sanitizers currently used in schools has been recalled due to potential public health concerns.
Schools are being asked to stop using ViraPro hand sanitizer immediately, after the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Navy issued a product recall Thursday night.
This is one of 11 providers available to schools under the multi-provider framework for PPE for educational settings.
It is not known how many schools are currently using this product.
In a statement, the Department of Agriculture said that the tests it conducted show that some of the disinfectants for sale do not comply with the regulations.
“Part of the product contains methanol instead of ethanol,” he said.
“Prolonged use of such a disinfectant can cause dermatitis, eye irritation, upper respiratory irritation, and headaches.
“This product may not remain on the market or be available for use.
“The public is advised to stop using this disinfectant with immediate effect. A Department investigation into this matter is ongoing. ”
All schools are now being asked to check if they have used this supplier and if they have this product in stock.
Schools should follow the advice of the Department of Agriculture to stop using it immediately, said a spokeswoman for the Department of Education.
Affected schools must make local arrangements to purchase hand sanitizer stocks and can maximize the use of hand washing to support necessary hand hygiene, he added.
“If a school that is affected finds it necessary to do so, they can choose to close for the day or close early on Friday, October 23.”
“If a school is having difficulty obtaining a replacement hand sanitizer, it should contact the Department on the Covid-19 helpline and the email address provided to the schools.”
“Additional funds will be provided to schools so that they can purchase necessary supplies from an alternative supplier.”
