Mason Greenwood has issued a statement after committing the most heinous of football crimes: allowing himself to be filmed ‘inhaling hippy crack’.

The Sun exclusively claims that Greenwood “partied with a friend” and indulged in the totally legal act of inhaling nitrous oxide “a few weeks ago.”

The footage has come up casually as the Manchester United striker seeks to repair a reputation damaged by his adventures in international duty during his first call-up with England.

Greenwood issued a statement to Daily telegraph apologizing for his “bad judgment” on the latest story.

“I have now become aware of the health risks associated with this practice and accept that even trying, as shown in these historical images, was a bad part of my judgment,” Greenwood said.

“I strongly urge others not to follow my example. Although I am only 18 years old, I realize that I have privileges and responsibilities, but this week I have also learned that I will be judged to a higher standard due to my career as a footballer and I must respect that in the future.

“I will learn from these lessons and I am determined to restore the faith that my manager and the coaches have shown in me.”

He is far from being the first footballer to fall victim to the tabloid obsession with ‘hippy crack’. A dozen Arsenal players received front-page solar treatment in December 2018, a ‘England football star’ (with two youth caps) appeared on the cover of the Daily Star in April 2016 and Raheem Sterling and Jack Grealish are also among those who have managed to survive something given to children at the dentist and women at work in Birth.
