Greater number of people in hospitals and ICUs since May

There are 344 people with Covid-19 receiving treatment in hospitals across the country, the highest number of hospitalizations since May 20.

It’s an increase of 25 from the last count, which stood at 319, according to the Health Department.

The latest figures show that there are also 39 Covid-19 patients in intensive care. This is also the highest number of people in ICU since May 29.

Yesterday, 1,025 new cases of Covid-19 were reported here and the average age of those affected was 31.

No further deaths were announced.

The Covid-19 incidence rate per 100,000 residents in Co Cavan remains the highest in the country.

Between October 11-24, the county had a rate of 966.2. Although it is still the highest rate in the country, the rate is falling. Last Thursday the rate stood at 1,055.5 per 100,000 inhabitants.

The county with the lowest incidence rate in 14 days is Tipperary at 134.8.

HSE CEO Paul Reid said yesterday that the test positivity rate for Covid-19 continues to decline and the average number of close contacts per person is now three, from 4.5.

He said most of the close contacts were from households.

He added that while it was too early to be an indicator, it was still a good sign.
