Spoiler alert!
Peter Sawkins has been named the winner of this year’s Great British Bake Off after beating the competition from Laura Adlington and Dave Friday in Tuesday’s final on Channel 4.
The 20-year-old Edinburgh finance and accounting student was named the winner after becoming the youngest finalist in the program’s history.
While Laura’s poor performance in the first two rounds of the final pulled her out of contention, Judge Paul Hollywood said the competition was “the closest to a draw I’ve ever seen.”
His fellow judge Prue Leith agreed that he was “very close” between Peter and Dave, 30, a Hampshire security guard.
The finale saw the trio tasked with making custard slices, nut twists, and a spectacular multi-layered dessert.

Peter was inspired by Cranachan Scottish pudding when he made his custard slices, using raspberries, oatmeal and whiskey for flavor.
Leith said they “looked amazing,” adding that she had made a “really beautiful slice of pastry cream,” while Hollywood praised its taste.
Dave also won praise for his coffee and caramel-flavored custard slices, and Hollywood praised his “beautiful” pastry.
However, Laura’s finale began with a disastrous first round after her cream failed to harden and her slices failed to hold their shape.
The 31-year-old digital manager from Kent told the judges she was “embarrassed” to serve her slices to the judges, adding that it looked as if they had fallen to the ground.
Laura also finished last in the walnut whirlwind challenge, which was completed in very hot conditions, after she screwed up her times and failed to get all the components to cool properly in time for tasting.
Dave excelled in the technical challenge, finishing first ahead of Peter.
The three contestants were tasked with creating a multi-layered dessert that reflected their time on the show in the final spectacular challenge.
Laura decided to recreate some of her previous triumphs in a dessert that included components that included Chelsea scones, macarons, and carrot-nut cake.
Leith praised their efforts and said “there is nothing wrong with cooking.”
However, it was not enough to bring her into conflict again.
Dave sought to redeem his failures in the previous weeks by trying for the second time some of the cakes he was criticized for in the previous weeks, including brownies, chocolate babka, and choux buns.
The judges gave mixed reviews about his attempt to correct the mistakes of the previous weeks.
Peter’s dessert included components that included a Victoria sandwich, choux buns, and Battenberg cookies and Leith labeled it a “good effort.”
The spectacular round was watched by the entire crew of the show’s eleventh season, which formed a ‘bubble’ at the Down Hall Hotel near Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire in the UK, throughout filming, after being screened for the virus and self-isolation.
Production of the series initially had to be delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, however, filming for the show ended in late August.
