The government is considering plans to introduce an additional bank holiday to reflect the enormous effort of the population this year.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin said there is “potential” for Ireland to get an additional bank holiday next year.
The idea was first raised by the Minister of Continuing and Higher Education, Simon Harris. Harris said he was open to the idea, as most of the holiday weekends were affected by the Covid-19 restrictions.
The proposal was put forward as a way to address the enormous challenges facing the hospitality and tourism industry.
When asked if the Government would consider introducing an additional bank holiday, Mr. Martin said: “I think there is a potential, yes, that we could do in terms of reflecting and recognizing the work of many workers in different fields and in different sectors. .
“We will consider it.”
The Taoiseach did not reveal any further details about the proposal, or what month the government would consider introducing the additional holiday.
Harris said it could be a way to mark the sacrifices people have made since the coronavirus outbreak.
He previously told TheJournal.ie: “Yes, I think when the country gets over this and it’s safe to start doing some normal things again, I think it would be beneficial to have a day to acknowledge all that people have gone through and sacrificed, so that people can enjoy with their family and friends. “
The coronavirus restrictions forced thousands of tourists to cancel trips abroad, and many families stayed in Ireland.
The country’s tourism agencies encouraged people to take a vacation at home, as foreign travel came to a halt. Tourism Ireland is expected to launch a major marketing campaign to promote the country again among foreign visitors.
