The government is ready for any request from the Northern Irish authorities to transfer Covid-19 patients to ICU beds.

An application has been submitted, but north-south contacts are intensifying as the situation in Northern Ireland worsens.

However, there is an opinion that such a request would be an important symbolic step for some Northern Executive parties, so they may be reluctant to follow that path.

There have been 722 positive cases of Covid-19 in the north in the last 24 hours, bringing the overall total to 35,554.

The Chief Medical Officers and Chief Nursing Officers have been in regular contact. CMOs meet weekly on Fridays.

Medical officials also exchanged views on how to prepare and train additional staff for the ICU.

“There were no requests for ICU beds. They know that we will help them as much as possible and if requested, ”said a senior government source.

The Republic’s medical officials advised their northern counterparts on how to train additional staff for the ICU.

“They were exchanging information on how we did it so that they could do the same,” said a source.
