The three leaders of the coalition party will meet tonight to discuss the imposition of stricter restrictions after Christmas.
Sources have indicated that the planned introduction of tougher measures will be brought forward to a date between December 26 and 30.
An announcement will be made after tomorrow’s cabinet meeting.
There is growing concern about the growing number of Covid-19 cases, as well as the new strain of the virus in Britain.
The leaders of Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the Green Party will discuss it later, together with the Minister of Health.
Sources indicate that “everything is under consideration”, which means more restrictions on hospitality and home visits sometime after Christmas, which would be before the planned date of December 30.
The inter-county travel ban may be reintroduced before the New Year.
They will also discuss extending the 48-hour travel ban with Britain, but Transport Minister Eamon Ryan has already said that it is unlikely to be lifted before Christmas.
Meanwhile, discussions continue about the repatriation of hundreds of Irish residents temporarily stranded in Britain.
Flights and ferries are expected to bring them home in the coming days.
