Public Expenditure Minister Michael McGrath said the government guidelines that go into effect tonight on home visiting are not a “ban.”
There have been many inquiries about the home ban visit. We are trying to limit home visits, but it is not a ban, “he said on RTÉ’s Prime Time.
The minister explained that people can visit other homes for necessary circumstances, including visiting a lonely friend or relative.
“We are trying to remove unnecessary bans. If someone is isolated, if someone is vulnerable, or if someone needs childcare, that’s okay. It is not a prohibition, ”he added.
“We ask people to exercise common sense and judgment. We are trying to reduce the number of people we all visit ”.
Speaking about the house ban that will take effect at midnight tonight, Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe said that following health guidelines “has its consequences.”
“As more demanding changes are made to public health guidelines, they have consequences,” he said on Virgin Media One’s The Tonight Show.
“For the 400,000 citizens who live alone, reducing social contact is difficult … this also has consequences.
“Our government is looking at many different things. We want to see what options we have, but now our focus is making level 3 and yesterday’s guidance work. “
It was announced Wednesday that Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal will enter Level 4 restrictions at midnight tonight, while there is a national ban on home visiting.
As of tonight, counties placed on a Level 3 restriction were allowed one visitor in their home or up to six visitors if they were from the same household.
These restrictions come into effect after the highest daily cases of Covid-19 were confirmed in the Republic of Ireland, with 1,205 infected.
There were also three more deaths.
A level 4 means the prohibition of home visits, weddings reduced to six people and the closures of hairdressers and barbers.
Pubs and restaurants may only provide delivery and take-out service.
Speaking about the new measures, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said: “We are on a journey with this virus and we have reached a difficult point on that journey. For that reason, we have agreed to move Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan to level four under the Living With Covid-19 framework. “
“A new Level Three state has been with us for the last week, and we want another week to analyze the effects of these measures.
“The truth is that there are concerns about the full implementation of Level Three. These concerns are related to poor application or adherence to advice when it comes to home visits, training and sporting events, people who go to work when they can and should work from home, as well as deviations in retail and other services. “
