George Nkencho’s family asks people not to share video of the fatal shooting

THE FAMILY of the man shot to death by Gardaí yesterday in Dublin has asked people not to share images of the incident online.

The man, George Nkencho (27), was shot and killed by gardaí during an incident in West Dublin yesterday afternoon.

The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) is investigating the incident.

In a statement, Nkencho’s sister, Gloria, said that her brother “suffered from a serious mental illness and those who knew him know what kind of person he was, he was not a bully or a criminal.”

“My family appreciates everything that everyone is doing. I kindly ask you not to share the video of the shooting. It’s not something I want to remember. “

Justice Minister Helen McEntee has called the fatal shooting “extremely traumatic.”

“The events of yesterday were extremely traumatic for everyone involved,” McEntee said today.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, the minister said: “Obviously this is an extremely disturbing loss, George’s life. It is a tragedy for their family and I want to express my condolences to them and to all those affected by the events of yesterday.

“This is not something that we see happen in this country very often, but what is going to happen now is that there will be an investigation, there will be an investigation by the GSOC into what happened and what happened.”

McEntee said Gardaí “understands the concerns and anguish that the shooting has raised” and is engaging with the local community.

“I can’t really say anything more that there will be an investigation, the matter will be looked at, but obviously it is extremely disturbing and traumatic for everyone involved.

“I want to once again express my deepest condolences to all those who have been affected, in particular his family.”

Mr. Nkencho was involved in two separate incidents at the Hartstown Mall at around 12.15pm yesterday. In both cases, gardaí said that he had threatened members of the public with a knife.

In one incident, a member of EuroSpar staff suffered injuries to the face. That man is receiving hospital treatment for his injuries. Moments later, Mr. Nkencho was involved in a public order incident at the local post office.

Unarmed and uniformed Gardaí responded to the scene and observed a man in possession of a knife.

He continued to threaten members of the public and an unarmed Gardaí with the knife, a Garda statement said.

Gardaí followed Mr. Nkencho on foot and in vehicles from Hartstown Shopping Center to Manorfields Drive, Dublin 15.

Multiple videos taken by members of the public in the moments leading up to his death show the 27-year-old, who is understood to have experienced mental health problems, walking through a green area and being followed by marked and unmarked Garda cars.

Mr. Nkencho was shot multiple times on Manorfield Drive in Clonee during the confrontation.

He was pronounced dead after being transferred to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown.

Gardaí has ​​learned of several videos taken of the shooting itself and its aftermath.

• you were at Eurospar, the post office or in the vicinity of the Hartstown shopping center at approximately 12:15 pm. M. From yesterday, or
• who were in the vicinity of Cherryfield and Manorfields estates, Dublin 15, between noon and 12.35 pm yesterday
• anyone who may have CCTV or other video footage of these incidents
