A GoFundMe was launched for the Eurospar manager in Hartstown, who was “violently attacked” moments before Gardai fatally wounded knife George Nkencho.

George Nkencho, 27, was shot during a confrontation with Gardai on Manorfields Drive, Clonee, on Wednesday.

Moments before this, Gardai responded to reports of a man wielding a knife at the Spar, where a store worker is believed to have sustained a broken nose.

A fundraiser has been launched for the store’s victim, a manager named Wayne, whom a close friend describes on Dublin Live as a “lovely guy.”

GoFundMe says: “Wayne is a manager of our local Eurospar.

“He’s one of the nicest people you could meet.

“He was violently attacked while at work. This page was created to support Wayne in his recovery and to let him know that all of Blanchardstown and beyond are behind him.”

The page has nearly raised its target of 7,000 euros after its launch on Friday afternoon.

A close friend of Wayne’s told Dublin Live: “I live in the area. He’s such a lovely guy and right now he needs to know that we’re all here to support him.”

“I am sure that when he feels capable, he will speak in detail about what happened.”

On Wednesday, an unarmed Gardai arrived at the location of the store where the suspect threatened the public and officers before he was chased to a home on foot.

Later, the Armed Support Unit arrived and were also threatened with the knife. They implemented a “graduated police response” using “less than lethal forces” including a taser pistol and pepper spray, but were unsuccessful.

Gardai repeatedly ordered the man to drop the knife before using force.
