Gary Neville has criticized Manchester United’s transfer tactics and urged them to move quickly from Jadon Sancho’s transfer saga.
nited has signed Ajax midfielder Donny Van De Beek this summer in a € 39 million (£ 34.1 million) deal that could amount to € 44 million (£ 38.5 million).
But former United captain Neville thinks it wasn’t enough this summer before the Premier League kicks off this weekend, and says the Red Devils have lagged behind Chelsea and Manchester City when it comes to to recruitment.
United’s season ended just three weeks ago with a Europa League loss to Sevilla, but Neville said: “Like everyone else, they were out for three months from the coronavirus, so I don’t think it should be the case that they did not have the resource or it is time to get things done.
“Chelsea did their job, City made three or four pieces. I don’t think timing is the problem.”
“It’s one thing with United that every time they go after a player in the last four, five, six years, it feels a little desperate.
“They think they can hold out, but in the end they always pay (the initial fee).
“That’s sometimes where I think you can take control, give a strict deadline and say ‘we’re walking away from this deal.’
The possible arrival of Sancho, the Borussia Dortmund star, has dominated transfer talks at Old Trafford this summer.
United want to make the England winger their star signing, with coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keen to add Sancho to fellow forwards Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood.
But Dortmund have resisted charging a fee of around 120 million euros (108 million pounds) and insist that the 20-year-old former Manchester City player is happy to stay in Germany.
“That has been the frustration with Sancho,” Neville said during a TalkTalk media session.
“The fact that it lingers. Just tell Dortmund ‘leave it there’ and go find another player.
“There are a lot of players around, there can’t be a single player you are chasing.
“It’s frustrating, but I think United have been better these last few seasons, more careful and without making mistakes.
“If you can’t make a deal (for Sancho) you have to move on. You certainly have to give the players strict deadlines.”
