Gary Neville has launched a scathing attack on Manchester United, calling his pursuit of Jadon Sancho “shameful” and claiming that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer faces an “impossible” task to win the Premier League.
Sancho was Manchester United’s number one goal this summer, but a prolonged transfer fiasco it ended with United refusing to raise the 108 million pounds Borussia Dortmund was asking for.
Donny van de Beek is still the only disbursement so far this summer, with Edinson Cavani thought to be close to completing a move.
With rivals Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea securing the signings they needed, Neville he has criticized the naivete of his former club, which he says could cost Solskjaer his job.
“I just don’t think they’re smart enough and wise enough and nimble enough in the marketplace,” Neville said. Of the ball.
“I was reading that Liverpool accepted an offer for Rhian Brewster for £ 24 million from Sheffield United. Liverpool is not just buying smart, it is selling smart.
F365 early winner: Edinson Cavani and his agent
“I look at Chelsea and I think they buy smart, they seem to sell smart for the last 15 to 20 years.
“The city spends a lot of money, but they seem to get deals, while United just doesn’t seem to be able to. Even with Harry Maguire last year, it dragged on to the end, Sancho this year. They don’t seem to be able to get deals across the line, they don’t do things efficiently or quietly.
Liverpool announced [Diogo] Jota and Thiago [Alcantara] – I know Thiago has been linked for a while, but it’s done at reasonable prices, £ 27 million and £ 40 million, not hundreds, so I don’t think they’re smart enough.
“They are being outwitted in the market by the other clubs and if you lose the draft you don’t win the league, it’s that simple. You can have a great coach, but if you don’t get the right players, you’re not going to win the league.
“The Sancho thing is shameful. It has been going on now for four months. That is embarrassing.
“And then making an offer that is rejected… the smart clubs, they have deals worked out behind the scenes, the agents are working hard, the club officials agree on things and when the offers are accepted, it is done.
“Who makes offers today that are not accepted? That doesn’t happen that often. Very rarely.
“Generally the clubs have the deal settled, the agents know what the player gets, the player knows what the club gets, the club knows what the other club gets. I just don’t get it at all, it’s not cool. That is why I have been critical.
“Ole, for me, has a time to win the league. He’s been there a season and a half and this is his third season.
“Will the league be expected to win this season? No. But maybe next season in his fourth he will have to win the league.
“He can’t win the league, it’s impossible to win the league against Liverpool this year unless he has three or four players to take him there.
“Basically, he ties the coach’s hands behind his back if he doesn’t give him the players he needs to win the league and yet he’s setting the goal of winning the league.”
